X ENSEMBLE

WVMEA X Ensemble Applications have CLOSED for the 2020 WVMEA Annual In-Service Conference to be held MARCH 5-7, 2020 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in Charleston, WV. To apply, music director must be a current, active member of NAfME at the time of submission and at the time of the conference;  the total number of performers in ensemble must be 4 or more and be able to perform within the space of a 36'x24' stage; ensembles may not appear on the WVMEA Conference program in successive programs; ensembles may submit recordings for either traditional honor ensemble or X honor ensemble, but not both; and elementary, middle and high school ensembles are encouraged to submit a recording.

A completed X Ensemble application must include all of the following components:
  1. A completed application. (click link below)
  2. Three mp3 recordings. (uploaded on application form)
  3. A copy of setlist from a recent performance.
  4. A list of potential repertoire to be performed if selected. Repertoire for the X Ensemble performance at the conference must be approved by the executive board. (uploaded on application form)
  5. A 50 word professional biography and an electronic head shot of the director to be included in the conference program if selected. (submitted on application form)
  6. A $50 application fee, submitted at the time of application, which will be used to supplement the WVMEA scholarship fund. A receipt will be sent to the applicant.
  7. The director's current NAfME membership number.

Submission Deadline: Friday, January 31, 2020 at 9 PM. This window of time ensures that selected directors/ensembles will have time to make logistical arrangements associated with traveling to the conference.  Questions may be submitted via email to xensemble@wvmea.org

John Marshall High School
The John Marshall High School steel drum band was formed in 2008 thanks to a generous donation from the Niekamp Foundation. Steel band class is a part of the daily curriculum at John Marshall High School and is open to all band members. The John Marshall Steel Band performed as an X Ensemble in 2018 and 2016. They also performed at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra and Music Conference in December 2019. Tracey Filben is Director of Bands at John Marshall High School.

University High School
The University High School Percussion Ensemble is one of the school’s extracurricular chamber ensembles. Students in the ensemble perform a variety of music – from classical to pop – and play percussion instruments such as marimbas and xylophones, snare and bass drums, timpani, trash cans, buckets, and more! The UHS Percussion Ensemble is receiving the designation “WVMEA Honor X-Ensemble” for the first time. Corey Orban is the Assistant Director of Bands at University High School.

Wheeling Park High School
Christie Curley is in her sixth year teaching choir and directing the Voices of Freedom at Wheeling Park High School. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she graduated from West Virginia University in 2014 at the top of her class with a music education degree, emphasizing her studies in violin and vocal.
